The most intimate museum along ·
Museum Mile· is the National Academy
of Design. Formerly the home of Archer
Milton Huntington (1870-1955) and his wife,
the sculptor Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington
(1876-1973) it is well worth a visit for its
extensive collection of nineteenth and
twentieth century American art .
Comprising over five thousand works in
many artistic styles spanning two hundred
years it is actually home to the largest
collection of its kind in the country.
Notable are the works of Frederic E. Church,
Richard Diebenkorn, Thomas Eakins,
Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Gehry,
Horatio Greenough, Winslow Homer,
Jasper Johns, Maya Lin, I. M. Pei,
Robert Rauschenberg, John Singer Sargent
and Frank Lloyd Wright.
