At the center of Central Park from 80th to 86th
Street is a great 13-acre oval lawn with a carpet
of lush Kentucky Bluegrass and eight ballfields.
Aside from its ballfields and free concerts given
by the New York Philharmonic and the
Metropolitan Opera the Great Lawn is a
spectacular place for reading and contemplation.
With the distant sounds of players in the field,
birds hovering overhead and the warming
sunlight of a fine spring day it is the perfect
spot to lounge with a good book or a picnic lunch.
Home to many blooming trees, Hawthorn, Crabapple,
and Kwanzan and Yoshino Cherry, the Great Lawn
effuses color as the different species flourish with
their fragrant blossoms.
